Blog Promotion Using Social Media
posted by ADMIN // June 05, 2009 // Market Your Website
Blogging is a social activity. If you are blogging without readers, then your words are just floating around in cyberspace. It's not enough to just have people showing up to read your blog: you want subscribers, you want comments, you want readers who will say "Hey, check out this great blog I found!" You can find such readers by connecting to sites like Twitter, Digg, Reddit and especially, Stumbleupon.
The first step to successful networking is to have a good blog. It must be something that people are interested in: not a vague, rambling series of webisodes about your tonsillectomy and visits to Wal-Mart. The best blogs are the ones that are about something, yet have a unique twist on that something.
For example, there are a lot of book blogs on the web -- most of them are book reviews. If you are passionate about books, you have to find an aspect of that topic that either hasn't been done before or hasn't been done that often. Your layout, your subject and most of all, the quality of your writing has to get people's attention.
Twitter is the simplest social media site to use and it can get you a few views. Tweet every time you post a new blog entry and be sure to visit other people's blogs also.
Digg & Reddit
Submit your blog to Digg and Reddit once and put the logo on your page so that people can easily see it.
Stumbleupon
Stumbleupon can literally get you thousands of views, but you have to have something worthy of a "good stumble." If you don't, you'll be castigated by the Stumbleupon users. You don't want to get "thumbs down." Even if your blog is good, you'll get a few red thumbs, but don't worry about those. Worry when most of your reviews are bad. Learn from those.
Don't use Stumbleupon just to promote your blog or website. Your account will be deleted if you do. Also, don't friend people just to spam them with your site. Don't send the same site over and over, and don't friend 500 people in one day just to blast their inbox with things that you don't even know they're interested in.
Of course, there are many other social networking sites. Myspace, Facebook, Technorati. Also, don't forget to bookmark your site on Google, Yahoo and AOL. Use an "Add-This" widget -- it's the bloggers best friend, since it allows people to bookmark your page on whatever site they prefer.
Your best bet is to be courteous, considerate and to use these sites for more than just showing off your blog. Remember, engaging readers is your job.
