Business 101: Should I Outsource Web Design for My Business?
posted by ADMIN // June 28, 2009 // Build Your Website
A web designer is a person with technical skills and creativity who can design web pages to meet your business needs. A big question is whether you should design your own web pages to save money or hire a professional web designer to get the job done right. Here are four questions to consider in preparation for this important decision.
1. What is your timetable? On the surface, the timetable may not seem like a relevant question. However, even with your own experience in web design, a deadline for launching a product or service might not afford you ample time to design your web site effectively before the launch. If you are attached to the web design, you must make the design a priority while still meeting other business obligations.
2. What is your degree of expertise? Don’t hurt your business reputation by making a poor choice to design your own site just to save money. You have to honestly assess yourself. If your expertise is not equivalent to a professional web designer, you should place your business interest above your personal desire. Only you know how important the web design is to the business outcome. Pick the right person for the job.
3. How important is the sleek design of your web site to the financial position of your business? If you already have a web site and are just designing a new portion of the site, the financial position of your business might not apply. If the site design is your first web presence or the site usability determines your success, you must decide who the best person is to effectively design a site that sells your products or services. You can use word-of-mouth from a trusted colleague or competitor to identify someone for the job if you decide to outsource.
4. What kind of design do your customers need? Thinking about the design of your web site from the user’s perspective should be at the top of your to-do list. A professional web designer should be trained to do this on every project. If you are too busy running your business to give this serious question the right attention, have other people evaluate your proposed web site or hire someone whose objective is to build a solid web site.
Choosing to outsource is not just a question involving time and money. The decision to outsource should be given ample consideration based on the job that needs to be done and who is in the best position to perform the job. Only you can determine if your business needs a professional web designer. Your business decision should be made after weighing all relevant factors.
