The Twitter world is growing at an exponential rate, and its micro-blogging applications are just as rapidly expanding. For every person there seems to be a different reason to use this short message networking service, from keeping in touch with friends and family to getting the latest news to marketing products and services. The one common thread with most Twitter users is the desire to expand their audience. Retweeting, or having your message forwarded on to others, is a great way to reach a larger number of people.

Expanding the Audience

Why do Twitter users want to expand their following? There are a number of reasons that people want to reach a larger audience. Some people are looking for answers and the more responses they get, the likelier they are to find what they are looking for. Others wish to share an entertaining or newsworthy tidbit with as many people as they can. Many are looking to promote their products, services, or events and are trying to reach as many Twitter followers as possible. Still others are focused on the social aspects of Twitter, wanting to connect with new people.

Retweet Secrets

1. Keep the subject interesting. There are many popular and urgent subjects in the social and media circles that are attracting a great deal of attention. There is also an equal amount of informative and educational material on the Internet that will draw popular attention. The main point is not to send out loads of irrelevant messages, like the color of your socks or whether you're having a bad hair day.

2. Keep the tweet short. Twitter has a limit of 140 characters for each tweet message. In order to allow your audience the possibility of retweeting your entire message, you need to leave space so that the retweeter can add things like RT (an abbreviation notifying others that this is a retweet), @username, their own comment, and possibly a URL to link to more information.

3. Use a label. Experience shows that people appreciate knowing the subject of a message, so begin the tweet with a label that describes the content of your message, like Reading or News.

4. Keep tweeting actively and relevantly. Someone who does not use Twitter often will find that their audience loses interest and moves on. Frequent, relevant tweets will keep followers interested and encourage them to spread the wealth.

Opening Up the World

Retweeting is a great way to pass on information, whether it's for personal reasons or for business. Even if you don't have an extensive number of followers, encouraging the ones you do have to retweet can mean reaching a vast number of people, which might improve your following, but will at least spread your content to a wider audience. Keeping these Twitter secrets in mind can improve your chances and open up a world of retweeting possibilities.
