Twitter Versus Facebook: Understand The Difference
posted by ADMIN // August 24, 2009 // Market Your Website
The Internet is an important tool for information exchange and communication. For people who are interested in social networking services, there are many choices. Two of the most popular social networking services today are Twitter and Facebook, both of which have an enormous following on the Internet. But is one service better than the other? They certainly both have their advantages and disadvantages.
Pros and Cons to Twitter
As a micro-blogging service on the go, Twitter has captivated a wide audience. It is versatile, with the ability to send and receive messages not only through the Twitter website, but also from cell phones and mobile services. Users may send multiple tweets, but since those tweets are short by design, receivers aren’t required to spend much time reading them. It’s a fast, easy way to keep your followers informed without having to make phone calls or write extended emails and/or blogs.
However, the shortness of the messages can also be a fault. People looking to go into detail about any subject will find Twitter restrictive with its 140 character limit. Because of the brief nature of the messages, many tweeting abbreviations have been born that may repel or confuse some of the less tech-savvy in the population. Twitter’s popularity is due in large part to its versatile, on the go use, but many Short Messaging Services charge fees for sending tweets through cell phones or other mobile devices.
Pros and Cons to Facebook
Facebook’s popularity is well established, with millions of dedicated users from all over the world. Facebook allows for photos and file sharing as well as text, and has a wide variety of extra features for each user’s profile on the site. There are also an incredible amount of applications that users can add to their profile, customizing their space to fit their personalities and needs. Facebook offers users a variety of ways to communicate and entertain without character restrictions, allowing users to express themselves and exchange information freely.
While there is an iPhone application to use with Facebook, the use of the service is mostly restricted to the website, which might be a disadvantage for people who can’t be tied to their computers. There have also been some privacy issues with Facebook profiles, though Facebook does have more privacy settings than other services and posting personal information is at the discretion of the user. Due to the large content and variety of activities on Facebook, the service is also an incredible time sink.
The Better Service
Both social networking services have much to offer users in terms of keeping in touch with friends and family, making new connections, and even supporting business practices. But which is the better service? The answer lies with the individual and their own specific needs. If they are on a time crunch and need a mobile networking service, than Twitter is the product for them. If users need more space to express themselves and have the time to devote to the service, than Facebook is ideal for them. Both social networking services have a niche and a role to play in today’s active, technological society.
