Help Your Visitors Search Your Website With Good Information Architecture
posted by WEBSITE MARKETING NOW // April 02, 2009 // Build Your Website
Your website visitors go to your site to achieve a specific objective. With that in mind, it’s important to structure your website so that they can find information fast. Here are five tips that will help you empower your site visitors to quickly locate the information they seek.
Avoid Long Pages: Keep your pages short and to the point. Many website visitors will limit the amount they scroll down a page. So, try to avoid forcing them to scroll too much.
Minimize Clicks: Wherever you require your site visitors to click on a link in order to obtain further information, minimize the number of clicks in the process. The more clicks you require, the greater the drop-off rate you should expect.
Include a Site Map: Different people like to search for information in different ways. With this in mind, complementary to your main navigation system, it’s important to include a site map, listing the pages in your site in one centralized location.
Use Consistent Navigation: Make sure that your website uses the same navigation system throughout your website to make it easy for your site visitors to move around in a non-linear manner.
Add Contextually Relevant Links: If the copy on a web page speaks to a subject on which you go into greater depth elsewhere in your website, then include a link. Contextually relevant links provide your site visitors with helpful options and can keep them on your site longer.
